For the sports fan, Los Angeles is home to the Los Angeles Clippers and the Lakers based at the Staples Center where the Kings also play for Hockey fans. Major league baseball fans can take in a game at Dodger Stadium with its incredible views of down town Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Mountains in the background.
For those whose cultural interests are in the arts, Los Angeles hosts an array of world class museums including the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Malibu, The Armand Hammer Museum in Westwood, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Mid-Wilshire adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, the Museum of Contemporary Art located Downtown, and the world class collection of the Norton Simon Museum in nearby Pasadena.
For art collectors and shoppers, galleries and boutiques abound in eclectic shopping districts like Montana Avenue, Main Street, and Bergamont Station in Santa Monica, Abbot Kinney Avenue in Venice, China Town, Japan Town, Melrose Avenue, Third Street West, and Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles. No shopping excursion would be complete without a visit to the Grove, The Farmers Market, and Century City, open-air shopping centers that capture the essence of the Southern California Life Style. Of course, Beverly Hills is in a class by itself when it comes to shopping.
Family attractions are plentiful in Los Angeles and surrounding areas including the beaches that stretch from Malibu in the North to the Gold Coast of Orange County to the South. The Santa Monica Pier has year round carnival rides at Pacific Park and to the South, Long Beach hosts the Queen Mary and the World class Aquarium of the Pacific. The Los Angeles area is rich in theme parks for the entire family including Disneyland® Park and Resort, Knott’s Berry Farm®, Universal Studios® Hollywood, Legoland®, Six Flags Magic Mountain.
Outdoor activities are plentiful. Cruising on a rented bicycle on the strand, a bike path along the ocean that runs twenty-two miles from Pacific Palisades in the North, past the frenetic Venice beach, through Marina Del Rey, to the white sand beaches of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance to the south. If the ocean is your thing, rent a sail boat in Marina Del Rey, or cruise to Catalina Island for a romantic dinner in Avalon. In Southern California, one can truly snow ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon. Local ski areas at Mt. Baldy, Mount High, Snow Summit, and Big Bear provide excellent winter skiing. Hikers will be amazed at the diversity of trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, and nearby Angeles and San Bernadino National forests including hikes to over 11 thousand feet!
For the star struck, several of the Studios host behind the scene tours including Warner Brothers Studio, Sony Pictures Studio, and Universal Studio Hollywood. Many of the sitcoms and a large number of talk shows on television are taped in Los Angeles. With a little work on your part, you could be a member of the audience. Audiences Unlimited is a Hollywood agency that distributes audience tickets for a number of shows. The Tonight show is taped in Los Angeles and tickets to be in the audience are free but get there early. If this is too much, you might consider eating in a celebrity owned restaurant or one of the tony establishments that are frequented by the stars.
Of course no trip to Los Angeles would be complete without taking in some of the hottest dining spots. The restaurants are so diverse; we recommend perusing the latest Zagats guide or call us for suggestions. If you are here midweek, lunch can be a great way to sample the fare at bargain prices compared to what you might pay at dinnertime. Don’t be shy about making dinner reservations early. Los Angeles crowds are ravenous for the best dining experiences and if you show up without a reservation, you are likely to go away hungry!
When it comes to hotels, prepare to be pampered. Choose from elegant and efficient to over the top (See the Beverly Hills section). Favorite accommodations in West Los Angeles include the Luxe Summit Hotel Bel-Air on seven acres just below the Getty Center, The Sofitel in West Hollywood just across the street from the Beverly Center and adjacent to Beverly Hills, the elegant Le Meridien Beverly Hills on Restaurant Row. Other popular hotels include the W Los Angeles-Westwood, Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Shutters on the Beach, Courtyard Century City, Holiday Inn Express Century City, and Residence Inn by Marriot.
