Can I go blind from my Restylane treatment?
While the probability of going blind from Restylane treatment is extremely low, the risk is not zero. Indeed, every medical procedure including the very safest ones comes with some level of risk. With any procedure, the key is in weighing the potential risk against the benefits of surgery. Dr. Steinsapir only advises treatments that he considers to be very safe, and he further recommends the most minimally invasive approach that addresses your needs. In this way risk is minimized but can never be made absolutely zero.
The total number of published cases of visual loss associated with injectable hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane can be counted on a single hand and this is over approximately 10 year of clinical use. Weigh this against greater than 10 million treatments in this same time frame to understand the rarity of visual loss associated with a filler service. Because of this rarity, many injecting physicians do not feel it is realistic to even mention this potential risk. This position is understandable. If you are reading this article, you are probably searching for information on this very subject. Will you feel reassured understanding that these numbers are very low or more concerned that yes visual loss has actually happened after this type of treatment? Like many decisions we make, this often comes down to personal comfort level and choices. Most individuals will understand that the risk is so small that the likelihood of the event does not really weigh into practical considerations.
Restylane is a very useful filler around the eyes because it works well with the thin and delicate nature of the skin in this area, and provides nonpermanent, natural-looking results that can be altered with the enzyme hyaluronidase. To get the best treatment result, it’s crucial that your doctor possesses exceptional expertise in the anatomy of the eyelid and its surrounding areas. A skilled injector will be able to place Restylane with precision and control, while avoiding any areas of greater risk. It’s absolutely critical that your injector possesses intimate surgical knowledge of any anatomy being treated; for in respecting the anatomy of the treatment area, complications can be avoided or minimized. If you seek treatment from a lay-filler or nonspecialist, you’re at greater risk for complications. The wrong injector may inject filler intravascularly, which can substantially increase the risk of a potential complication. You are also much more likely to be satisfied with your results when you undergo treatment with a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in fillers, eyelid anatomy, and facial aesthetics.
Dr. Steinsapir has developed and published a very safe procedure called Deepfill Restylane, which places Restylane in the undereye hollows to correct volume deficiencies there. He is a physician consultant to Medicis, Inc., the distributor of Restylane, and is among the top 3% users of these hyaluronic acid fillers. He values clear communication, gives straightforward answers, and closely monitors follow-up care and to ensure that you heal well, are satisfied with your results, and that any arising complications can be addressed immediately. To learn more about the safety and benefits of Restylane placements customized for your particular goals and unique anatomy, call us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Steinsapir.

Monocheek syndrome: What to do if you have been overfilled with fillers.
Advantages of Fillers
One major appeal of hyaluronic fillers like Perlane, Restylane, and Juvederm–arguably some of today’s best facial fillers for many individuals–is the relative ease with which treatment can be given, modified, and even reversed. Opting to have facial filler strategically placed in areas of volume deficiency can greatly enhance your facial contour and restore the full features that are associated with youth. The type of filler or fillers you need and their placement will depend upon your unique facial structure and concerns, as well as medical history. In many cases, treatment of dark circles under the eyes can be achieved with Restylane and greatly complimented by Perlane placed in the upper cheek.
Treatment by facial fillers is a nonsurgical, comfortable procedure that can be performed as a comfortable, simple office visit to a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon who specializes in fillers and facial balance. The benefits of these hyaluronic fillers are long-lasting. Patients often find that under eye treatments can last a year and in some cases up to two years. This means that these nonsurgical results rival the longevity of surgical results and often exceeds the results of surgery.
Flexibility and Corrections with Fillers in the Cheek
However, if for any reason you are dissatisfied with your treatment, need a simple adjustment, or desire further consultation, your doctor can alter or essentially erase your filler results by using the enzyme hyaluronidase. In the case of an individual who has been overfilled with fillers, such as too much Perlane in the cheek. Overfill can take a couple of common forms. One type of over treatment is described by Dr. Steinsapir as the “monocheek” syndrome. This describes the situation when the top of the cheek is overfilled causing the lower eyelid crease to be filled up. It appears as though the cheek extends right up to the eyelashes. Another overfill syndrome is when the doctor overfills the cheek to low. This look is called the “New New Face” by Jonathan Van Meter. It makes the face look like a caricature of one’s face.
These overfill syndromes do not look natural. These treatments can be shaped to make the effect look much more natural. Correction by hyaluronidase is accomplished via small injections, which are comfortably and performed in the office. Typically, Dr. Steinsapir can help you completely resolve your concerns in just one or two office visits. The ease and safety of the correction means that there is just no reason why an individual should have to put up with dissatisfactory results. Dr. Steinsapir finds that some individuals put off being corrected because they are hoping the results will resolve on their own. However, because these treatments last a very long time, he advises having the service adjusted as early as possible to get the longest benefit from the treatment.
Expertise
The key with any satisfactory cosmetic treatment is choosing the right doctor. In most cases, your original cosmetic surgeon will be eager to correct your filler treatment with the hyaluronidase enzyme. Unfortunately, there are also underqualified medi-spas and nonspecialists performing these services, and this lack of expertise can be the reason you received too much filler, or filler that was not optimally placed in the precise anatomic areas where you need it. In such a case, it’s advisable to seek a second opinion from a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who makes facial fillers a major focus of his or her practice, and who has proven success and leadership in the field. As one of the top 3% users of Restylane and Perlane within the U.S., and as a Physician Consultant for Medicis, Inc. who distributes these fillers, Dr. Steinsapir provides unparalleled filler services and experience. If you are dissatisfied with treatment or desire a second opinion, you do not need to wait any longer. Please call us today to learn how you can improve your experience and achieve immediate benefits.

Perlane Power
With a number of facial fillers on the market today and a number of fillers that have been used historically, we have seen great progress as these medical technologies and their applications develop over time. Restylane and Perlane stand out among the most trusted, safe, and useful fillers today. Perlane is one of the hyaluronic acid fillers distributed by Medicis, Inc., along with Restylane. We have found Restylane to be optimal for placement in under-eye hollows due to the thinness of the skin in this region, and we have also found that Perlane is a stand out product for volume replacement in the cheeks, chin, and in areas that require deeper filler placement for the shaping of the features. Often these are highly complimentary fillers, with Perlane restoring the deep fullness to the cheeks and provide a foundation for the volume that is associated with youth.
Perlane is a thicker hyaluronic acid filler, which makes it ideal for the types of contouring described above. It is a product with proven utility and safety, and its application is also easy and convenient. Treatment with Perlane can be as simple as an office visit with a qualified expert physician. Indeed, many individuals seeking advice from Dr. Steinsapir opt for treatment in the office at the time of the initial consultation. This treatment offers the benefit of longevity yet the convenience and flexibility. While you can enjoy your Perlane results for a year or more, eventually they will wear off. This allows for treatment at convenient intervals and without the concerns often associated with surgery. We find that most individuals receiving Perlane filler from Dr. Steinsapir are happy with their results and choose to maintain the aesthetic benefits achieved with periodic office visits.
In the past facial fillers like grafted fat, sculptra, and silicone oil have had their supporters and detractors. Today Perlane is typically a better alternative to these permanent and semi-permanent options. With Sculptra, altering your treatment is far more challenging. A saline injection may have some utility in breaking up the filler, but often it’s insufficient, and you may even require excision to alter your results. Silicone filler can also be understood as a permanent filler, and over time you are more likely to have dissatisfactory outcomes that are more complicated to change. And while grafted fat is sometimes indicated, Perlane is usually a more comfortable, minimally invasive, nonsurgical option. Surprisingly Perlane has a longevity that is very competitive to grafted fat, which often seems to require repetitive treatments to maintain the effect.
Lumps and bumps created by the permanent fillers can require major surgery to address. Conversely, results from the filler Perlane are easy to shape and change when needed. A treatment might hold a little too much volume and this can easily be modified in the office with an injection of the enzyme hyaluronidase. With a simple, comfortable office visit you can have your results shaped when necessary to achieve the best possible result. Perlane results rival and in many cases, exceed what can be accomplished with surgery.
When choosing a treatment provider, be sure to choose someone with differentiated expertise. As one of the top 3% users of Restylane and Perlane, Dr. Steinsapir makes facial fillers a major focus of his private practice in Beverly Hills. Will photo facial treatments affect my Restylane service?
Minimally invasive procedures have become a very popular way of improving one’s appearance. Several different treatments can be performed at one time minimizing downtime. Photo facial and facial filling with Restylane and Perlane is a very common combination of services. The fillers address volume deficiencies like under eye dark circles, lip lines, loss of facial fullness and Photo facial can improve sun damage, facial redenss to even the complexion. The filler is placed sufficiently deep in or below the skin that it is unaffected by the Photo facial. So there is no reason to be concerned if you are having both services at the same time or if you previously were treated with fillers. Your suitability for either or both of these procedures is best determined at a private consultation with a qualified oculoplastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon. The good news is that these procedures are compatible, safe, and comfortable.
Understanding the basis for how Restylane and Fotofacial both work will clarify why it is safe to receive both treatments. Photo facial is an intense pulse light treatment (IPL) that improves red spots, small blood vessels, and sun damage. These treatments are the basis for photo facials, and they are generally delivered over the course of four to six sessions at three weeks intervals. This is sufficient time to see improvements in your skin’s appearance, creating a more even tone and skin firming. Fotofacial works by directly treating your skin where the sun damage, pigmentary, and capillaries responsible for redness reside.
Restylane treatment, on the other hand, is carefully placed under the skin to correct deficiencies in facial volume, such as the under eye circle. For example, under eye Restylane is safely placed beneath the skin to address the volume needs, thus improving what we perceive as dark circles under the eyes. Because Restylane works from under the skin while Fotofacial directly targets the skin itself, Restylane treatments are unaffected by IPL treatment, and vice versa.
It is important to always disclose your complete past and current medical history with your physician as you develop your treatment plan. This will ensure that your care is as safe and personalized as possible. Dr. Steinsapir specializes in both Fotofacial and Restylane treatments and is the inventor of of Deepfill Restylane method, the breakthrough approach to correcting under eye hollows. Dr. Steinsapir is friendly and approachable, and will gladly answer your questions and help you feel confident in your treatment choices. What should I expect with my filler service?
Cosmetic fillers like Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvederm®, and other hyaluronic acid fillers are an excellent alternative to surgical procedures. These products are composed of a cross-linked sugar gel that can correct wrinkles, volumize the nasolabial fold and lips, fill acne scars, and improve under-eye dark circles. Dr. Steinsapir is the inventor of a unique and effective method that specifically addresses under-eye discoloration. This technique is called the Deepfill™ method. Facial fillers last about a year and treatments are easily adjusted using hyaluronidase, if necessary. For many years, Bovine Collagen was the gold standard of fillers, but has now been displaced by Restylane® which is now the filler to which all others are compared.
Like Restylane, Perlane® is intended for volumizing, but it differs from Restylane in that Perlane is intended to provide facial volume in the deep dermis and superficial subcutaneous fat. Perlane and Restylane are not equivalent products. It is essential that your doctor places Perlane deeper than Restylane. When used properly, Perlane is an excellent alternative to volumizing products like Scluptra® and Radiesse® and even fat transfer. Treatment with Perlane also lasts well over a year.
Where are injections commonly performed?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are office-based services. You may see estheticians and unqualified individuals like medical assistants offering injections illegally in spas and salons under the justification that they have a “medical director.” No States permit this arrangement. Unless a doctor is present and performs the service, this type of situation is the illegal practice of medicine. As with BOTOX®, don’t let an unqualified individual perform your Restylane or Perlane service.
Just like BOTOX, only a licensed medical doctor or a nurse under the direct supervision of a licensed medical doctor can inject hyaluronic acid fillers. The exact details of the required qualifications vary by State so it’s important to research the individual you wish to perform the injection to ensure he or she is qualified. However, just because your doctor or nurse is minimally qualified to perform the injection does not necessarily indicate he or she is the ideal choice for the procedure. As with many other medical procedures, the best results require a certain level of qualification, skill and experience; these concerns are perhaps even more important when considering modifications to your physical appearance.
What’s the typical recovery course and what are the physical restrictions?
Many of Dr. Steinsapir’s patients resume their normal activities just after leaving the office with the exception of no workouts for 24 hours. Wait a day before going to the gym. If you don’t bruise, there will be about thirty to forty hours during which you experience minimal swelling. Many patients, both men and women, can hide this swelling right away with a camouflage makeup that matches their skin color if necessary. If your lower eyelid skin quality is poor and you often collect a small bag of puffiness under the eye, the doctor may counsel you regarding the need to consider a procedure like a chemical peel or surgery prior to getting regular filler treatments so you don’t experience prolonged recovery after each filler service. This can be discussed when you have your initial consultation.
What are common complications and how are they addressed?
Most people, about 70 percent, do not experience bruising after a Restylane treatment; the other 30 percent experience some degree of bruising; most of it mild. But a very few (one or two in a hundred) will develop a black eye. The black eye can take about two to three weeks to completely resolve, and this is a cosmetic concern without health dangers. The worst part of this is that many will assume that you were the victim of domestic violence. Glasses and makeup help to hide the bruise while it is resolving. Considering that Restylane will last over a year, the recovery process is very mild and comfortable even for these few.
For the few Restylane recipients who experience bruising, the short-lived bruise is worth the long-term results. It’s a good idea to obtain treatment at least three weeks before big events like vacations. For the biggest occasions such as your own wedding, Dr. Steinsapir advises have treatment 2 months ahead of the event to be completely certain that your pictures will turn out great.
To minimize your risk of bruising, your doctor will ask you to stop taking certain medications that thin the blood, such as aspirin. If you are taking anything prescribed by a doctor, Dr. Steinsapir strongly advise that you consult with your prescribing physician before discontinuing the medication. If your doctor suggests that you continue the medication, this does not mean that you aren’t a good Restylane candidate. If you are willing to be at a slightly elevated risk for bruising, Restylane can still be effective. Your regular doctor and your cosmetic specialist can help you decide the best route to take.
The incidence of allergic reaction varies with the products used and should be discussed with the treating physician but the incidence of allergies to these products is very low.
For unwanted highlights or bumps that occasionally occur after an otherwise excellent filler treatment, the enzyme hyaluronidase makes Restylane injections easily adjustable to a more desired aesthetic, and your doctor can even erase the treatment completely if you determine together that this is your best option. In the event that you experience lumps or unwanted effects from your Restylane treatment, hyaluronidase makes it easy to adjust hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane. This flexibility created by the ability to adjust a service is one of the most important factors making HA fillers such a popular service.

I am having a complication from a Restylane treatment and my wedding is in six weeks. What should I do?
Wanting to look your best for your wedding day is something everyone is entitled to. In the event that you experience unwanted effects from your Restylane® treatment, hyaluronidase makes it easy to adjust hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Juvederm®, and Perlane®. In most cases its best to return to your original doctor who should be eager to make sure you are happy with your treatment and outcomes. However, there are circumstances where there is simply no substitute for seeing a leading expert to help you get the results you need.
Seeking a second opinion
Dr. Steinsapir often sees individuals frustrated with treatments they received elsewhere. Surprisingly, many people are not aware that the hyaluronic acid fillers can be adjusted using the enzyme hyaluronidase. This enzyme is delivered with a small injection during a very comfortable office visit. Dr. Steinsapir has helped people who put up with unsatisfactory treatments for much longer than they need to. These issues are easily dealt with using the enzyme in one or two visits. It is the ability to make these adjustments that makes it feasible to provide many of the advanced filler services.
Correcting the problem
Restylane is a long-lasting, but not permanent sugar-gel facial filler that is preferred for improving facial contours due to its natural results, even in sensitive areas like dark circles under the eyes and the lip edge. Restylane and Perlane offer the ability to modify results when necessary. This includes treatments that were performed in the past and need fine-tuning. The ability to adjust a treatment with an enzyme can take a good treatment and make it great. In some cases, as the body slowly breaks down the material over time, slight irregularities may develop despite the initial quality of the treatment. Sometimes, the answer is adding filler rather than subtracting volume. For this reason, it is best to start with a detailed assessment with an expert like Dr. Steinsapir.
Restylane has long-term benefits and it is also easily adjusted even long after a treatment. These characteristics are essential in the eyelid and surrounding areas. The skin here is very thin and the tissues are very sensitive, so even small issues show up. Don’t live with a treatment that isn’t everything you want it to be. See an experienced cosmetic surgeon who can help take a treatment from like to love.

Can Surgery Remove Persistent Dark Circles?
Dark circles under your eyes can make you look old and can even degrade your self-image. Diet, exercise, and plenty of rest are cited as solutions for dark circles. Skin creams and dark circle concealers can provide some help. Often people are under the mistaken impression that surgery will fix the dark circle. While there are a small percentage of individuals who will benefit from surgery for their particular type of dark circle, in the majority of cases surgery will be of little benefit and can make the situation worse.
Why don’t cosmetic creams and bleaches work?
Although creams and bleaches don’t work to brighten the area under your eye, a dark circle concealer may do the trick. Dark circle concealers work by mixing mineral particles in the cream. These minerals reflect the light to create the illusion that the area under your eye is fuller. Concealers are less expensive than under eye filler, but concealers stay on the skin just a few hours. In contrast, and under eye filler service can provide help for up to a year and in some case longer without the need to constantly apply makeup.
The darkness of under eye circles is optical. The skin is dark because there is no fat between the thin lower eyelid skin and the darkly colored muscle just under the skin. Filling the hollow with hyaluronic acid fillers reduces the area in the lower eyelid that can shadow, improving the dark circle. Under eye filing with Restylane using the DeepfillTM method developed by Dr. Steinsapir directly helps the hollowness in the lower eyelid, a major factor contributing to the dark circle.
Restylane can help
Dr. Steinsapir finds that under eye Restylane® is the best option for dark eye circles. Restylane® is a hylauronic acid filler made of up cross-linked sugar gel used to fill wrinkles and provide volume in the face. “Unfortunately, that lower eyelid circle develops early on the face,” notes Dr. Steinsapir who commonly treats young entertainers who needs to maintain their youthful edge in Hollywood. The treatment requires a skillful hand but once placed and adjusted, the treatment is completely natural and can’t be detected by others. No wonder this has become the most popular eye dark circles treatment.
When you do decide to have under eye filler, take time to look for a doctor who knows what they are doing. Dr. Steinsapir reports that when he teaches other doctors to perform the method, he often finds that they lack the detailed anatomic knowledge needed to successfully perform the treatment. It is also critical that the injecting physician assess how you do after the treatment because a certain percentage of treatments require an adjustment. Dr. Steinsapir explains that everyone holds a slightly different amount of water in the tissues and small areas of fullness can spoil an otherwise great result. For this reason, he encourages his patients to follow up about a week after treatment to assess how the service has settled. “Adjustments can easily be made with the Restylane® treatment at any time after the service, which is why the treatment is so powerful,” he notes. He advises avoiding medicines and herbal products that can thin the blood for about a week before treatment. If you are taking something prescribed by a doctor, check with your doctor first before stopping a medication. Also it is advisable not to work-out until 24 hours after a treatment. These precautions minimize the risk of bruising.
